The Protest! (15)
I have to admit, American-style fundamentalism completely mystifies me. Here you have a bunch that says the Bible is the “inerrant word of God!” — until it hits something they cant quite go along with, like, you know, shellfish or divorce, and then suddenly it’s “Well, that doesnt apply to us anymore!” Somehow, out of 637 Levitical laws, only one still is supposed to be observed… and you probably know which one that is. But even then, they’re coy about their game, because after all God says the punishment is supposed to be death. While I’m sure many fundies would applaud executing LGBT folk for simply existing, they pull back from that… but only slightly, calling instead of life in prison. The very fact that a country like Canada can allow same-sex marriage is morally unfathomable to them… until you ask them about the morality of the Bible requiring a rape victim to marry her attcker or forcing a widow to marry her dead husband’s brother if she’s not yet sired a son… regardless of his current marital status. It’s all about keeping the blood line going, right? No matter how perverse one has to be to make it happen.
Call me crazy, but somehow I cant see God going along with all this — regardless of which deity you happen to worship. Certainly if He (of She) cant be bothered to end civil wars or prevent natural disasters like hurricanes, then why do we think He (or She) really cares who marries whom? The Good Book does speak to divorce five times — even Jesus says it’s a no-no, that when you make those vows, you’re making them forever, not till you get bored. And yet you never hear the fundies questioning the legal existence of a married couple splitting up.
So forgive me if I look at the rantings of Franklin Graham and sneer at this huckster’s latest attempt to raise money through “moral controversy”. Maybe folks should be asking him about those multi-million-dollar mansions he and his daddy built for themselves on the backs of the poor. I doubt you’ll get anything like an honest answer, but it never hurts to try…
OK, big moment coming in the next episode of this thing. Hope you’ll stick around for the party.
