One thing I’m exploring more these days is building textures that come closer to emulating their real-world equivalents: this one, for example, is using displacements to create a suggestion of a hand woven sweater. Displacements are hardly anything new: you’ll find them used in all manner of things… but this type of application is new for me, and fun to work with.
Of course it adds another layer of complexity to the rendering time, but I imagine that sometimes it’s going to be worth it.
