This is the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War, the War to End All Wars… World War 1. The death toll surpassed anything ever before seen, all because of a bureaucratic bungle that pitted a bunch of countries against each other for no reason whatsoever beyond the sublimely idiotic lack of an ability to talk like decent human beings.
And now it seems we’re rushing hellbent into World War 3… for much the same reason. Mindless stupidity over whose dick is bigger… it seems we cant get one single day without at least three or four wars somewhere on the planet. You’d think we’d learn… but obviously we never do. As Voltaire once wrote, “Men raise flags when they cant get anything else up.”
Tonight at 10PM, Halifax will commemorate the start of this tragic piece of history by shutting down all its lights for one hour. Other places around the globe will as well. But you can bet that the cities that made the most off war — Washington, Moscow, London, all the other self-important “centres” — will burn brightly through that hour. Draw from that what you will.
