Arms are for Fighting! (9)

Freedoms are such interesting things, when you look at them from a purely conceptual point of view. In North America, we pretty much have the freedom to do just about anything we want — and we make no bones about expressing that right.

But it seems that increasingly we forget that, with freedoms and liberties, for every right there is an inherent responsibility… and sober minds would know when those responsibilities should kick in. When it starts impacting someone else’s sense of security, maybe it’s time to rethink your approach.

This little storyline started over the issue of gun control, which Americans are now trying to deal with yet again. My own beliefs, for what they may be worth, are that if you feel you have some driving need to own something that fires thirty rounds per second with auto reload, it’d better be something more than because you think there’s a monster under the bed or hiding in the closet. And eventually, as with any obsession, it wont be enough. You’ll want — no, scratch that: you’ll need more. And then more. And then more. And then it’s not too much longer before everyone’s rolling around in armoured tanks and going hunting with portable missile launchers (Well, hey, cut through it, and arent those just guns of another kind?).

So, bottom line: you want a gun? Go for it. It’s legal. Just dont get pig-headed about it in the process.

Okay, new storyline tomorrow. One less didactic, I promise. 🙂
